The Importance of Checking Biocompatibility of Materials

Verifying the biological compatibility of dental materials used for restoring teeth is extremely important to avoid potentially harmful toxic reactions. When it comes to biocompatibility, you have to consider three levels: general, bio-energetic, and immunological.

General biocompatibility

When checking general biocompatibility, the orthodontist studies how the given material reacts with human tissue with the objective of determining its toxicity at the cellular level. Since this kind of toxicity is one of the inherent properties of the material, all individuals react to it in more or less the same manner. Materials like nickel and mercury are highly toxic and must not be used.

Immunological biocompatibility

This type of biocompatibility is mainly concerned with the way the individual reacts to a dental material. Materials that do not cause an adverse reaction in one individual may cause an adverse reaction in another. This is because of an immunological response based on the biochemical makeup of the patient. Two tests are used to determine this biocompatibility:

  • The Clifford Materials Reactivity Test
  • Kinesiologic Testing

The Clifford Materials Reactivity Test, for example, studies how antibodies in a person’s blood react with a particular material. Using this blood test, it is possible to find out whether a material is suitable for an individual. When evaluating a Clifford test report, materials that come out as NS (not suitable) must not be used. Materials that show S (suitable) have to be tested further. Kinesiologic testing is also used for testing biocompatibility.

Bio-energetic biocompatibility

Eastern medicine has been studying energy flow through the human body for thousands of years. Using Applied Kinesiology and Electro dermal Screening (EDS), it is possible to determine how a particular material reacts with the human body on the energetic level. If the materials that are not energetically compatible are used, it will lead to harmful interferences.

Allergies should be taken seriously, as about 15-25 million Americans suffer from various kinds of autoimmune disorders. Even dental materials cannot be considered immune from provoking allergic reactions. There are patients who do not experience allergic reactions in the traditional medical sense, but they do feel a little biocompatible sensitivity towards certain dental chemical compounds. They show symptoms when they undergo dental restorations using traditional materials.
